Festival History

Porirua’s first Festival of the Elements was held by the Porirua Community Arts Council on Waitangi Day in 1992.

The Festival uses the arts to celebrate the cultural diversity of Porirua, made possible by the Treaty of Waitangi.

The elements of earth and air, fire and water embrace concepts of significance to all cultures, concepts around which we can all unite.

This is a festival about community and about arts.

Putting together the Festival involves support from many other organisations and community groups, including the Porirua City Council.

We are always keen to involve more people, and can always do with more helpers!

Over the next several months media releases will be posted on this website to keep our supporters up to date with the Festival of the Elements 2008.

WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS 2006 WELLINGTON AIRPORT COMMUNITY AWARD

Wellington Airport and The Community Trust of Wellington awarded the 2006 Wellington Airport Community Award to the Porirua Community Arts Council for their voluntary work in supporting the arts and promoting public involvement in the arts in the city of Porirua.

In particular, the Awards recognised the work of the Arts Council in organising the Porirua Festival of the Elements, held on Waitangi Day, and involving 800 performers, representing 30 different cultures which make up the Porirua community. Over 20,000 locals and 10,000 visitors attended this year's festival to participate in a variety of arts, music, dance, children/youth activities, and market and food stalls.

The Community Awards recognise the value of voluntary work undertaken by community groups across the greater Wellington region which contributes so strongly to the fabric of our communities and to the vibrancy of our region. Community Trust Chairman, Mattie Blackburn, described the awards as being "our own tangible way of showing appreciation to our community's volunteers".

"These awards go right to the heart of the community, and are about people who believe in the importance of community – people who are self-motivated and selfless", said Lloyd Morrison, Infratil Managing Director and Wellington Airport Director.

This is Wellington Airport's third year in sponsoring the Community Awards. "Wellington Airport is intricately involved with the success of Wellington, and for us to win, we need the community to win", said Lloyd Morrison. Wellington Airport, which hosted the award ceremony.
